A Young German Man (Me!) on an Old German Train in Chile

Today was one of those days I'll never forget - I spent a return trip from Talca to Constitucion on a train that was built in the 1950ies by a German company and is still running to this date. It was a travel back in time. Narrow gauge railway line, two trains a day (one in the morning, one in the late afternoon), maximum speed 40 kph, and a 88 km trip needed 2h50 one way. It was absolutely perfect. We were lucky and sat in carriage 1 at the very front, seat 1 and 2, and had a full view over everything.

Constitucion is an intersting town. It got hit by a tsunami in 2010 after an 8.8 strong earthquake was measured just before the coast of the town. A tsunami wave of up to 29 metres hit the town and devastated it. Nothing is seen anymore other than a newly built seafront area.

The main reason why I went to Constitucion was that a year ago I watched a German TV programme about that train. Not that I am a massive train spotter, but a nearly 80 year old train got my attention. And it was absoultely fabulous!!!
